The FDA KIND-a Got This Wrong

Give me a break. There are very few packaged snack bars that I recommend to my clients as most are filled with chemicals that one can’t even pronounce. In addition, most are filled with a ton of sugar disguised as fructose, corn syrup, rice syrup, and of course, high fructose corn syrup.

Kind Bars have made the news when the FDA sent the parent company of Kind Bars a warning letter indicating that the company was incorrectly labeling their snack bar as “healthy,” despite having too much fat to justify that designation. The letter indicates that the products are thus misbranded and has ordered the company to change the labels.

According to the FDA letter, the term “healthy” can only be applied to food that has one gram or less of saturated fat per serving, and no more than 15% of the serving’s calories are from saturated fat. However, the FDA found far more than that in KIND’s snack bars.  Where is this fat, you ask?  In their non-GMO almonds, walnuts, cashews, etc!

Lets’ look at what the FDA claims is “healthy.”  They say there has to be a limited amount/percentage of saturated fats, cholesterol and sodium and must contain certain vitamins, minerals, protein and fiber.  However, they don’t even talk about limiting the amounts of sugar.  

The problem here is that ever since this false low-fat craze started brainwashing us, the US has had a continuous rise in obesity and diabetes that has now reached epidemic proportions.  The reason is that when the food manufacturers stripped their products of fat, they didn’t taste so good.  So, the manufacturers  loaded them up with sugar to taste better.  People are consuming sugar at alarming rates, especially our children.  Sugar has been proven to be just as addictive, if not more, than cocaine.  It is also highly inflammatory and the real root cause of most heart disease–NOT fat as most of us are led to believe.

In fact, the lack of good fats in our diets may be responsible for the spike in neurological diseases as well.  Think about it. Our brain is made up of 60% fat.  If we don’t eat fat, the body is so brilliant, it searches itself to find fat to transport certain vitamins (A,D, E and K). The brain happens to be filled with the fat it needs.  Voila. That means less coating around the brain (the myelin sheath) leaving it more susceptible to neurological compromises.

Yup, I will take my non Genetically Modified Kind bars that have beautifully high (good) fat and high protein nuts  with its natural fruit but low sugar.  Ok, there are some with higher sugar, but there are plenty to pick from that have 5 grams or less of sugar.  My 2 faves are vanilla madagascar and dark chocolate nuts and sea salt.  

Knowledge is power.  Shop the permimeter of the supermarket for one-ingredient foods.  If you do purchae packaged food, be sure to read labels and figure out for yourself what is healthy and what is not.
