From Deflategate to Foodgate

Repost from October 22, 2015

When Tom Brady’s name comes up, people perk up and listen.  This  quarterback hunk for the new England Patriots seems be constantly in the spotlight.  Whether it’s about his quarterback skills, famous model wife, Gisele Bundchen or the latest scandalous Deflategate, he knows how to make headlines.
Brady’s latest headline is his take on the food that’s being peddled to us.  While being interviewed by a local Massachusetts radio station, he said, “I think we’ve been lied to by a lot of food companies over the years, by a lot of beverage companies over the years…but we still [believe] it.  That’s just America, and that’s [how] we’ve been conditioned.”
This popular jock expressed how he feels the public has been duped into thinking what is real food and what is not.
Brady said, “We believe that Frosted Flakes is a food…of course they taste very good…”
Some would even say theyr’e GRRRRRRRRReat!  Ok, I digress…
Brady continued, “…and of course all those companies make lots of many selling those things.  They have lots of money to advertise.”

Is Brady onto something here?  So many of us start really paying attention when we start looking at labels of the “food” our kids eat.
On Coca-Cola, Brady spoke more about this beverage describing it as“poison for our kids.”
“You’ll probably go out and drink Coca-Cola and think ‘Oh yeah, that’s no problem.’  Why? Because they pay lots of money for advertisements to think that you should drink Coca-cola for a living?” he added.  “No, I totally disagree with that.  And when people do that, I think that’s quackery.  And the fact that they can sell that to kids?  I mean, that’s poison for kids.  But they keep doing it.”
Brady even added, “That’s the education that we get.  That’s what we get brainwashed to believe, that all these things are just normal food groups, and this is what you should eat.”
Wow!  I’ll bet Brady had no idea that his words would hit such a nerve.  In fact, Coca-Cola and Kellogg scrambled to give quick responses.
Fox reported that a Coca-Cola spokesperson said in response:  “All of our beverages are safe and can be enjoyed as part of a balanced lifestyle.”  Adding:  “We offer more than 200 low- and no-calorie beverages in the U.S. and Canada and a wide variety of smaller portion sizes of our regular drinks.”
On the cereal side, Kris Charles, a spokesman for Kellogg said, “Cereal is a delicious and nutritious breakfast.  Numerous studies show that a cereal breakfast is associated with lower BMIs (body mass index) in both children and adults.  As a matter of fact, a serving of Frosted Flakes with skim milk has just 150 calories and delivers valuable nutrients including calcium, B vitamins and iron.”
Kudos to  Tom Brady for having the courage to talk about the chemical-laden processed “food” that is being sold to our children and ourselves.  In fact, I counted at least 17 ingredients in Frosted Flakes, some of which I couldn’t even pronounce.  It has not 1 but 2 forms of sugar–sugar AND high fructose corn syrup (as if one isn’t enough to help our kids crash an hour after eating this sugary mix).  Additionally, I’d love to see the studies Charles refers to concerning BMI.  Could it be from the milk and not the cereal at all?  Hmmm.
On the soda end, the word “safe” is certainly a vague term at best. When a 20-ounce Coco-Cola has 11 teaspoons of sugar, yes, 11, is that considered “safe” or healthy at all for anyone?  Keep in mind that theSurgeon General recommends only 3-4 teaspoons per day for our children and only 6-7 teaspoons per day for adults…  The low-calorie/no calorie alternatives provide no further solution with the amount of dangerous chemicals and neurotoxins.
Thank you Tom Brady for sparking the conversation! Let’s consider one-ingredient foods as the best options for us and our children.  I can think of a simple and GRRRRRRRREAAAAAAT breakfast of a banana with nut butter as filling and yummy.  How about eggs and a side of turkey bacon?  Down that with clean, refreshing water and you’re ready to start your day out right.
