What Happened to Us on Our Anniversary (Funny!)

Mike and I celebrated our 31st wedding anniversary last night.

It was certainly not as momentous as renewing our vows last year at Delicate Arch in Utah (yes, that’s our family cheering at the base!), but it was something we will never forget.

We were meeting our daughters, Rachel and Jennifer at the Sea Fire Grill for dinner in New York City last night.

While we knew it was going to rain, we hadn’t realized the full forecast…

So, we did our usual thing and took the subway to go uptown as it is always the fastest way to go. However, on our walk to the subway, it literally started raining sideways with crazy gusty winds.

Despite having our trusty umbrellas and rain jackets (well, me at least!), our pants were so soaked, it felt like I was wearing 10-pound weights on them. We finally got to the subway and rode uptown easily.

We only had a few blocks to walk after getting out of the subway to get to “dry ground” at the restaurant.

It was still raining sideways but we plowed on and finally only had about a block to go and could see the lights of the restaurant down the street.

We crossed over Park Avenue but only made it to the island in between the uptown lane and downtown lane before the light changed. We hopped over huge puddles just to get there and were so close.

We were waiting for the light to change so we could cross over the one lane and then it happened.

It was literally like a scene out of a movie or sitcom.

A car came whizzing by (like, really? In the middle of a major rain storm?). And the car produced a huge, perfectly formed tidal wave of lovely New York City puddle water which sprayed and landed perfectly on both me and Mike.

I remember it like it was in slow motion as we both looked at each other with our mouths wide open…

And howled laughing! And when I say “howled” yes, howled. It was so funny that we were so close… and so wet already, and then…this!

Mike got the brunt of it on his shirt to match his already soaked pants and even got some of New York’s finest Park Avenue gravel in his mouth! My umbrella definitely protected me more than Mike, but my the bottom part of my hair and coat and pants were directly in line of the hit.

The light finally turned and we crossed that street, still dodging puddles (not that it mattered at that point) and “squish walked” up the street laughing all the way to the restaurant.

We ended up having a wonderful dinner at the appropriately themed-for-the-night “Sea” Food restaurant. We all had a good laugh and celebrated the love and laughter we shared for our 31 years together:).

It’s all how you look at it, isn’t it?

May you all choose to share lots of love and especially laughter, on those memorable rainy nights.

“It is our choices that show what we truly are far more than our abilities.”

Live well and love more,
