This Familiar Product is Great at Cleaning Toilets?

It’s like a miracle cleaner.

I use it to clean the bugs off my windshield that won’t budge with my windshield wipers.

It also works quite well to remove rust or scum build up around the toilet.

It’s a pretty common product and chances are you have it in your pantry right now.  The crazy thing is that you are far more likely to throw it down your throat than to clean your toilet…

Believe it or not, folks, I’m talking about SODA.

The reason it cleans so well is phosphoric acid, the acidifying agent that helps slow the growth of mold and bacteria in the sugary solution.  The phosphoric acid is what actually gives soda that tangy, sharp flavor.  However, it is more acidic and bitter than lemons or vinegar.

That is one of the reason 8-11 teaspoons of sugar is added to each 12 oz can of soda to help cover up the acid taste!

The benefits of ingesting phosphoric acid doesn’t end there.

Not surprisingly with its corrosive qualities, the body tries to compensate to balance the acidity by pulling out calcium where it can-from your bones.

That is the reason soda has been linked to lower bone density in some epidemiological studies, including a discussion in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Of course there are a few more reasons why you may want to reconsider before you have the “Gotta Have It.”

A few studies confirm what we pretty much know about the consumption of soda.

The 2012 May issue of the American Journal of Nutrition said it found an increased risk of stroke in people who consumed more than one soda per day.

These findings are not surprising in light of the growing body of evidence linking intake of sugar sweetened beverages — of which soda makes up the largest percentage — and diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity and high cholesterol.

In fact, a European study with over 350,000 participants cited in Diabetologia, concluded that drinking just one 12-ounce can of sugar-sweetened soda a day raises the risk of diabetes by 22% compared with drinking just one a month.

It’s the High Fructose Corn Syrup that really does much damage by it rapidly converting to fat by the liver leading to excess fats and lipoproteins that contribute to obesity, insulin resistance, Type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, kidney stones and gout.

If that’s not enough to convince you, even the caramel coloring in soda is toxic. The Center for Science in the Public Interest filed a petition to the FDA in February, 2011 to ban caramel coloring as they reported that it had 2 cancer causing chemicals in it.

And whatever you do, don’t jump into the diet versions.

With artificial sweeteners such as NutraSweet and Splenda, these are proven neurotoxins that can present even more issues with diseases than the “Real Thing.”

I know this from personal experience the terrible side effects these can present.

I had terrible brain fog, fatigue and migraine headaches.  I remember like yesterday that it took all of my energy to just walk my Elementary school kids to the bus in the morning.  And then felt like I was hit by a bus for the rest of the day.

When I learned my symptoms may have come from my 4 or 5 can-a-day Diet Coke addiction, I gave it up, cold turkey.

Magically, my symptoms seemed to dissipate overnight–EXCEPT my memory.  It’s still just not where it used to be:(.

So, what are better alternatives to these great cleaners of toilets and windshields?

Water is the best.  Add some lemon juice or a splash of cranberry if you want a little flavor.

I know, I know- that sounds so boring.

But the more you drink water, the more your body will help you realize how much you have missed it.  Then you will begin to crave water just, as you craved those sugary and “sugar-free” drinks.
