Study Finds Drugless Way to Combat Antibiotic Resistant Superbugs

While hospitals have been struggling with antibiotic resistant Superbugs such as MRSA and other Staph infections, a new study suggests that Vitamin B3, or nicotinamide, may be a powerful tool in treating these deadly diseases.

The findings were published a week ago on August 27th in the Journal of Clinical Investigation by researchers  from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, the University of California-Los Angeles and other institutions. According to the article, the research found that high doses of this vitamin increased the ability of immune cells to kill staph bacteria by 1,000 times . The research was done both in laboratory animals and with human blood.

What does this mean?  It means that this helps the body be able to fight off these deadly infections on its own by creating a stronger immune system (1,000 times stronger!)  It boosts the number of white blood cells called neutrophils that  targets the these infections that pose a significant threat to public health.

MRSA      The announcement indicated that Vitamin B3 was given at megadose, or therapeutic levels, and were far beyond the levels normal in a regular diet.  However, these large doses have been used safely in humans and for other medical purposes, according to the article.

To note, there is no evidence yet that normal diets or conventional-strength supplements of vitamin B3 would have any beneficial effect in preventing or treating bacterial infection, said Adrian Gombart, an associate professor at the Linus Pauling Institute.

The benefits of treating with mega doses of vitamins are numerous.  They do not cause the normal plethora of side effects of typical drug therapy.  Also, unlike antibiotic drugs, vitamin B3 does not destroy all the beneficial bacteria in the gut along with the harmful bacteria. So for most people, taking mega-doses of therapeutic vitamin B3 is preferable to taking immune-destroying antibiotics that can later promote the growth of Candida albicans and other harmful yeast overgrowths and bacterial imbala.

As I always say, take charge of your own health.  Be aware of alternatives and don’t be afraid to ask questions.  Of course, the best defense is an even better offense.  Boost your immune system to help stave off diseases by eating more one-ingredient foods and by moving more.
