The Ancient Latest New Trend

It’s been around for thousands of years.  However, you would think it’s a hot new health thing with it trending in the news with celebrities doing it such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Shailene Woodley (OK, I haven’t heard of Shailene Woodley but apparently she is a famous actress..).

So, what’s this hot new “form of healing” that has the potential to help with just about any illness or chronic condition?

First, it originates from Ayuverda which means the “Science of Life.” Ayuverda is a 5000 year old system that uses traditional forms of healing, one of which is calledOil Pulling.  This traditional remedy helps to cleanse the body by detoxifying and cleaning the gums and teeth with specific types of vegetable oils.  It works by “pulling” bacteria out of the gums and mouths which then attach themselves to the oil which is then spit out.

I originally heard about it through a friend.  Then, I saw it all over the news. I was intrigued and always up to trying new things, especially “ancient remedies.”  I always look back to our ancestors as it seems they often had the right ideas regarding health as opposed to our modern treatments.

It is actually very simple.  All you need is unrefined Sesame  oil, Sunflower oil or Coconut oil.  Sesame oil is recommended but many people prefer the taste of coconut oil.

First thing in the morning on an empty stomach, take 1 Tablespoon of one of the above oils and just swish it around your mouth and in and out of your teeth for 15-20 minutes.  Do not gargle.  The goal is to swish the oil enough so that the oil pulls the bacteria from your gums.  Don’t let the oil just sit, keep swishing and do not swallow it.  Keep in mind that the oil will be filled with the bacteria you are trying to remove (however, if you swallow a little, don’t be alarmed, it will just get excreted in your feces.)  When you are done swishing, spit it out in the garbage (I spit it into a dixie cup first).  You don’t want to spit the oil into the sink as it will harm your pipes and there will also be bacteria in your sink.  Then, rinse your mouth, brush your teeth and use a tongue cleaner to clean your tongue.

You will notice the oil has turned a milky white after you spit it out.  You may also notice your tongue has a white coating until you scrape it off–all good things as this means toxins have been released.  To keep my toothbrush and tongue cleaner clear of the bacteria, I rinse them well and then soak my toothbrush and tongue cleaner in a dixie cup with hydrogen peroxide every few days.

What’s the verdict?  I started Oil Pulling 6 weeks ago and I had a dentist cleaning 2 weeks ago. My dental history is that I have recessed gums and therefore have been slated for years to get my teeth cleaned every 3 months instead of the typical 6 months.  Well, my dentist was so pleased with my improvement with my gums that he changed my cleaning schedule to every 6 months!  I also see that my teeth are whiter and feel that I have fresher breath.  That was just 4 weeks!

Regarding some of the claimed benefits of Oil Pulling such as helping abate:

chronic diseases,

heart disease,

arthritis,

eczema,

chronic infections,

headaches,

insomnia,

kidney function,

bronchitis and more,

I can’t say.  However, if my gums have already shown definite improvement, who knows what other benefits my body is experiencing that haven’t surfaced yet.  The best part is there is no harm in trying and easy to do.
