There’s Always a Silver Lining

  There’s Always a Silver Lining

Hurricane Sandy has ravaged us here on the East Coast this past week and I apologize for not being able to get out Let Us HEALTH You last week.  There has been so much devastation for so many but it also seems that the best in people come out during these times.

While we still have no power, long gas lines, lots of downed trees and bruised homes, it is nothing compared to those who are suddenly homeless from the crushing effects of Sandy. During these times, it is especially important that we feed our minds with “good food.”  Positivity, optimism and goodwill will nourish a soul as much as a healthy meal (maybe more!).  We should truly be grateful first about what we do have instead of focusing on what we don’t have.

Therefore, on the lighter side, I will focus on a few positive things I have learned from this ordeal:

1.  You can cook breakfast, lunch and dinner on your grill (even eggs!)

2.  Playing the Game of Life with your family by candlelight produces far more laughs than watching TV (it makes it easier to cheat, too…).

3.  Giving can turn into fun treasure hunts!  In our quest to buy as much clothing as possible to help displaced residents on Staten Island, we found $5 warm gloves and $2 hats at Walmart.

4.  For every nasty person in the very long gas lines, there are 2 more who have extra gas cans they brought to fill up for their neighbors.

5.  Sleeping at night with no heat produces lots of cuddly body heat (the maternity wards in hospitals better be preparing for the influx nine months from now!)

6.  It’s not such a bad thing to be forced to clean out your refrigerator due to no power.  I found a few things that had expired in 2008!

7.  Cars can be transformed into the new cozy family meeting spot first thing in the morning as we stumbled in to get warm, charge our phones and listen to the news.

8.  Kids have been Tweeting on their smart phones that they feel like they are Amish.  Really??

9.  How is it that in an unheated house, the basement is much warmer than the upstairs?

10.  He is a wise man who does not grieve for the things which he has not, but rejoices for those which he has.  ~Epictetus
