I went to Montreal this past weekend.  What a charming city with its French flair and magical European style.  What wasn’t so magical was my first stop–the bathroom in the Montreal airport.  This was where I was greeted with a rather large used needle drop box filled to the brim.  It was a bit shocking but admittedly not the first time I had seen one.  In my pollyannish  mind, my first thought was that the needles were used for crack or cocaine.  Then, it hit me lock a rock that this need for safe storage for needles was most likely from taking medication such as insulin used to control Diabetes.

What a sad state of affairs we live in that we have so many people having to inject insulin, that needle disposal of needed medications has become too common.  But why is this need for insulin so high?  It comes down to Obesity.  It was quite a surprise to learn from a 2014 study that Montreal had an obesity rate of over 30%.  That’s almost 1 out of 3 people in that city is considered obese!  Montreal’s kids fared a little better with only 1 out of 5 being obese.  Hallelujah? We may snicker at our friends to the north, but the US has the rather prominent distinction of being #1.  In the US, the adult obesity rate climbs as high as 41% in Arkansas and Mississippi with our children topping Montreal’s at over 21% in some states.

Obesity has truly reached epidemic proportion.  Hence, the rise of Type 2 Diabetes has been alarming at 21.2% of our US adult population in 1990 to 32.5% of our population in 2014.  Type 2 Diabetes is the most common form of diabetes where the body can’t produce enough insulin in response to eating sugar or foods that break down into sugar.  Insulin is an essential hormone that helps escort sugar to the cells so it  can be used for energy.  However, when not enough insulin is produced, the sugar remains in the blood.  Type 2 Diabetes used to be called Adult Onset Diabetes, but with so many children now getting this diet-related disease, the name was changed to Type 2.

The time is now to take control of your body by eating the food it was intended to eat.  It’s time that we all educate each other and our loved ones so we are not the ones placing those insulin needles in the designated dispensers.  Is this the vision we have for our children?  It is truly easier than you think by following these general guidelines:

  • Shop the perimeter of the grocery store and buy delicious one-ingredient foods (chicken, apples, sweet potatoes,…)
  • Dump the sugar and processed foods
  • Drink water-get rid of the juice and soda that is pure sugar
  • Avoid sugar-free substitutes as they are mostly neurotoxins that make you GAIN weight
  • Eat more clean protein such as chicken, fish, turkey, beans,…
  • Eat more green vegetables and colorful fruit
  • Add good fats such as olive oil, coconut oil, avocado but avoid bad fats such as hydrogenated oils, vegetable oil, canola..

Using these general guidelines and you will not only lose weight and lessen your chances of getting obesity diseases such as Type 2 Diabetes, but you will lose those sugar cravings as well.  If we all eat better, maybe we can replace those needle drop boxes with more soap dispensers:)

    I was recently shocked to see one of those sharps disposal containers in a public restroom. It’s a sad commentary on our state of health these days. It is cheaper, quicker and easier to eat unhealthy foods than healthy ones. Our lives are so fast-paced sometimes, we rarely take the time to cook. However, I must say, your recipes are pretty quick and easy, making healthy eating attainable!
