Why You Need to do This Again and Again and Again

Have you ever heard the trick to remembering someone’s name is to repeat it to them at least 3 times within the first few minutes of meeting them?

“Hi, Jill. It’s so nice to meet you.”

“What exactly do you do, Jill?

“That’s great, Jill. You sure seem like you enjoy it.”

That’s 3 times to slip into conversation to make the other person engaged BUT really…that repetition helps seep into your subconscious mind so you’re more likely to remember their name.

Make sense?

Well, repetition happens to work with everything in life. Both for the good stuff…and for the bad stuff.

Let’s take athletes for example. They know they have to practice often, lots of repetition, to improve and get the result they are looking for.

I’m no athlete, but I do get up every day during the week and jog or some form of High Interval Training outside.

People even tell me that I have so much discipline.  But I really don’t feel that way.  It’s something I don’t even think about, it’s just something I do.  It’s part of my morning routine and has become more of a habit like brushing your teeth.

What’s a habit?

When you don’t even think about what you’re doing-you just do it. It has become part of your subconscious.

And the goal is obviously to create good habits. This way, it’s so much easier as we just do these things that serve us well without thinking.

But, as we all know, creating bad habits can happen just as easily…

I have to admit I unwittingly have created a new habit that I need to stop.

After dinner a while back, I’ve been wanting something crunchy and sweet.

So, this version of dessert I came up with is to put some whole flax seeds in a pretty dessert dish, add a little MCT oil and a little sea salt and mix. Then, I put some frozen wild blueberries in my magic bullet with a little water and make a blueberry sorbet. Then, I top off my flax seeds with the frozen treat.

Is this a “bad” dessert to eat? Of course not. But…I admit I’ve been looking forward to eating it every night after dinner whether I’m full or not. And I’m even craving it because it has more turned into a habit instead of a once-every-while treat. And oftentimes, I get pretty stuffed after eating it…but that crunchy, salty and sweet combo tastes soooooo good to me.

And it’s even starting to reflect on the scale now:(.

So now, since I am putting this out there (yikes) and admit it has turned into a habit I don’t wish to continue, I will consciously use the SAME method to get out of this habit as I did to create it.

And it all starts with repetition.

My goal is to say affirmations after I finish dinner that I am so grateful to feel full and satisfied.  And really feel it.  I plan to repeat this quite a few times as I clean up the kitchen and put everything away.  Then I will leave the kitchen and either watch TV with my husband or grab a book so I can distract myself from even thinking about my former habit.

My plan is through repetition, I will plant the thoughts of always feeling full and satisfied so that prior craving will dissipate.

I will keep you posted on my progress.

In fact, I’m excited to learn some new techniques as I am in the process of getting my Life Coach certification:).  In that course, I will be learning about NLP (Neurolinguistic programming) and hypnotherapy.  These skills are amazing at helping people create what they desire by planting suggestions in their subconscious.

I look forward to sharing these amazing techniques with you in the near future.

And I will also keep you posted on my own journey to release that dessert habit!

Start your own journey with something you would like to change.  Again, it starts with taking action and doing it over and over until it becomes so familiar to your mind that you don’t even have to think about it.

And keep me posted on your progress!
